Description

Ash Tree House is a house built around 1765, constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and a hipped slate roof. It has three storeys above a cellar and features five bays, with a slightly projecting central bay. The exterior includes chamfered quoins and a modillion cornice. The entrance, which is accessed by five steps, has a fanlight beneath a moulded semi-circular architrave supported by Tuscan pilasters and topped with a pediment that has consoles above shouldered pilasters.

The first and second floor windows have moulded architraves with shoulders and ears; the first floor window features a simple cornice, while the second-floor window has a scrolled top. The remaining windows have plain reveals, gauged brick lintels, and stone sills that form a sill band on the ground floor. Only the second floor windows, which have six panes, include glazing bars. Notably, the right-hand ground floor window has been converted into a door. There are two chimney stacks located behind the ridge.

Inside, the hall features fluted Tuscan pilasters that support a beam carrying the median wall. The open string staircase is adorned with plain brackets and three fluted balusters per tread, supporting a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail.

The house was built by Thomas Langton, a local flax merchant and the son of the founder of the Kirkham Linen Mill.
