Description
Dick Whittington's Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid to late 16th century, with some minor later additions and alterations. It is constructed with timber framing in a cruck style, featuring red brick infill and rebuilding, and has a roof made of corrugated iron over straw thatch. The cottage consists of two cruck-framed bays, with the right bay originally open to the roof. A stack was added to the left, and the right bay was floored over in the 17th century. The building is one storey with an attic.
The front framing includes square panels, with two extending from the cill to the wall-plate. There is a roughly central plank door with pointed strap hinges, and directly above it is a timber-framed gabled eaves dormer with a leaded casement. To the left and right of the door are early 19th-century leaded casements, with an infilled doorway immediately to the left.
Inside, there are two true cruck trusses. The left truss is located immediately to the right of the inserted stack, which has been sawn off on the ground floor to the back wall, while the right truss features a timber-framed cross wall between its blades. Both trusses have slightly cambered collars, with the left truss having a king-post of the Alcock apex-type G. The original single purlins and thatching spars remain intact. The ground-floor rooms feature chamfered ceiling beams and joists, with the left room retaining its original elements. There is a partly infilled inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel on the left stack. A semi-winder oak staircase is located to the right of the entrance, and the first floor has wide boarded oak floorboards.
