Description

Tatlow Cottage is a cruck cottage dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features a cruck timber frame set on a stone plinth, with outer walls mostly rebuilt in red brick and brick dressings, along with remnants of a stone wall on the ground floor of the south wall. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a central brick ridge stack. The cottage has two storeys and two bays, originally designed with a lobby entrance plan.

The west elevation includes a small central fixed pane window in a semi-circular headed area of later brickwork, likely the original location of the doorcase. Flanking this are 20th-century two-light glazing bar casements, with the northern window featuring a narrower cambered brick head above. Above these windows, there are two similar 20th-century casements, and between them are partial remains of the timber frame. The original timber wall plate is visible just below the eaves.

On the north gable wall, a 20th-century porch has been added, and the east elevation includes a two-storey 20th-century addition. Inside, the southern room has a large inglenook fireplace with an oak panelled cupboard beside it, while the northern room features an 18th-century fireplace. The staircase is from the 20th century, and the upper rooms display an exposed cruck truss on the central wall.
