Description
The Muniment Room, located to the south of Trusley Old Hall, is a summerhouse that dates back to the early 17th century. It underwent alterations in 1902, restoration in 1958, and further changes in 1980. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and quoins, topped with a hipped pyramidal plain tile roof that features a ball finial on a stem. It has a plinth with stone copings at the base and is a single bay, single storey structure over a basement.
The north elevation includes a 20th-century flight of stone steps leading up to a fine early 18th-century style stone doorcase, which was added in 1980. This doorcase features an open swan-neck pediment with a central achievement of the Coke family, above a semi-circular headed doorcase with a staff-moulded inner edge, a raised fillet on the outer edge, moulded imposts, and a raised keystone. Fluted pilasters on either side have harebells carved on their capitals, and above the frieze are diamond and flower motifs between triglyphs. The panelled door below is also from 1980.
On either side of the north elevation, the corners are accentuated with extra stone pilasters topped with scrolled brackets. The west and south elevations have 20th-century moulded mullion and transomed windows, while the east facade features a 20th-century window and doorcase designed in a 17th-century style. The lintel of the doorcase is inscribed with 'Non Aliunde Pendere'. Additionally, there is a stone plaque on the east side of the steps on the south elevation, which contains an abbreviated Latin inscription detailing the dates of the various building programmes. Inside, the room features re-used 17th-century oak panelling from Etwall Hall on one wall, along with a re-used 17th-century plaster panel that includes an inscription. The building is included for its group value only.
