Description
Ivy Dene Farmhouse and its integral barn, likely built in the early 18th century, are now combined as a house with the barn serving as a garage. The walls are currently roughcast but are believed to be constructed from a cobble base and clat and clay, probably on a timber frame, with some brick patching. The building features a steeply-pitched tiled roof with a crow-stepped gable parapet and a chimney at the left end. The farmhouse is two bays wide, with a later addition at the left end that is not included in the listing, while the barn extends three bays to the right.
The structure is two storeys high and has a small brick lean-to porch offset to the left of center. Each floor of the house has two square windows with glazing bars. The barn to the right has double wooden wagon doors in the middle bay, a window to the right, and a small rounded triangular loop light near the right corner, mostly hidden by ivy. Notable features at the front include a chamfered plinth about half a meter high extending from the porch to the right of the barn doors, a large boulder at the left corner of the original house, and a rounded corner shape. There is also a small exposed section of timber under the kneeler of the gable, which may be the end of a wallplate.
The right gable wall of the barn and a significant part of the rear wall are made of cobble and clay-straw lump, not covered by render. The lofted third bay of the barn has a short added outshut of brick, and to the right of this is a doorway to the middle bay with a segmental-headed wooden frame. Although the interior was not inspected, it is likely to contain other points of interest. This building is listed as a very rare survival of construction materials typical of the Fylde region before the 19th century.
