Description
"By-the-Way" is a cottage, likely built in the late 17th century, with a later addition. It features pink colour-washed rendered handmade brick and similarly coloured brick, with roofs made of corrugated sheet covering thatch, sloping boarded eaves, and modern tiles. There are two brick chimneys, one at the right gable and another at the junction. The older part on the right consists of two small bays and two low storeys, with small lean-to additions at the right end and rear. The entrance is through a glazed porch located at the front corner of the right gable wall, with a two-light casement window above. The front wall includes a segmental-headed three-light casement window at the ground floor and two small-paned sliding sash windows under the eaves. All these windows, along with those in the single-bay two-storey addition to the left, have ornamental external louvred shutters. The rear features a large dormer that breaks the eaves. The interior has been mostly altered, but large old purlins are visible on the first floor.
