Description

Critchley's Farmhouse, now a house, is likely from the early 17th century and has been altered over time. It is constructed of squared sandstone with quoins and features a stone slate roof with a brick chimney at the gable. The building has two bays and is one-and-a-half storeys high. A modern stone porch is located at the right end, overlapping a later addition. The ground floor has two square but unequal windows, which are 2-and 3-light casements, and there is a small 2-light casement in the eaves above the second window. The rear wall shows different construction styles, with a small random rubble section for the second bay and squared stone in diminishing courses for the first bay, which is set back slightly. There are two inserted windows in the first bay and a doorway that has been altered into a window in the second bay. Inside, there is a timber-framed post-and-rail partition wall with wattle-and-daub infill, and the lintel of a doorway is framed into the front end. A similar service-room partition in the first bay has been partly removed. On the first floor, a large collar truss is present, with the tie beam severed in the center by an anciently inserted doorway that has an arched head undercut in the collar.
