Description
The War Memorial Clock Tower is a clock tower built around 1920, constructed from rock-faced snecked gritstone with quoins and topped with a slate spirelet. It has a square plan and is accessed by four low steps. Designed in the Gothic style, the east side features a two-centred arched doorway that is chamfered in two orders, with long-and-short jamb-stones and voussoirs. Above the doorway is a large rectangular panel that contains a metal plate inscribed in capitals: "To commemorate the glorious memory of the men of Heapey and Wheelton who fell in the Great War 1914-1918."
The second stage of the tower includes a trefoiled recess with a small louvred opening and a projecting semi-circular sill. The third stage displays a clock face set within a chamfered circular surround, which is enclosed by a square hoodmould with foliated stops. The top stage features a corbel table leading to a chamfered coping and pierced square battlements, which surround the spirelet adorned with swept slate cladding and a weathervane.
The other sides of the tower also have clock faces; the rear side resembles the front but lacks a door, the north side has no additional features, and the south side includes two lettered panels. The upper panel displays 46 names, while the lower panel, headed "1939-1945," lists 12 names.
