Description
Hill House is a farmhouse and house that has been combined into a single dwelling. It dates from the 17th century and 19th century, with alterations and recent renovations. A 19th-century house was added to the front of the first two bays of the three-bay 17th-century house. The building is constructed entirely of sandstone; the older section features coursed thin sandstone rubble with large quoins, while the addition has watershot coursed stone with raised quoins. Both sections have slate roofs, with a steep pitch over the older part, and ridge chimneys.
The 17th-century house has two low storeys and includes remains of recessed mullioned windows, some of which have hoodmoulds but are missing their mullions. One of these windows is located at the ground floor of the exposed front of the third bay, another is at the first floor of the gable, and there are three at the ground floor of the rear. The 19th-century addition has two higher storeys and features two windows on each floor, which were originally sashed with plain surrounds but have been altered to casements with glazing bars. The left ground floor window has been further modified. There are also two similarly altered windows on each floor of the right gable and a plain doorway near the junction of the two sections. The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed to contain some interesting features. The absence of any original window openings at the first floor of the rear wall suggests a possible cruck-framed origin.
