Description
Stone Row is a terrace of workers' houses built in 1830, located off Wigan Road in Aspull. The houses are constructed from coal measure sandstone and feature a modern tile roof at the front, while the rear slope retains its original slate roof. This terrace consists of six single bay, double depth, two-storey cottages made of coursed squared rubble. Each cottage has windows with canted heads on both floors, featuring 12-pane cross casements, of which five are original. The doors are located to the right, with two original plank doors and others that have inset glazing. The cottages have coped verges and six brick chimney stacks. The rear elevation includes two-light casements below and three above, with several original windows. Stone Row was built for the Earl of Crawford and Balcearres as housing for workers, likely for the Haigh Sawmills, and is recognized as an early example of workers' housing in the area.
