Description

A terrace of 16 houses, with a further 3-bay house at one end, built in the late 18th century for the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres. The houses are constructed of dressed stone with a tile roof. Each house generally has two storeys and one bay, except for the end house, which has three bays. Windows and door surrounds are plain; the windows are 20th-century 2-light casements, and the doors are 6-fielded-panelled. Brick and stone axial stacks are present. The end house features a coped gable, a gable-end stack, and a head to one kneeler. Number 1 has a small outshut, and a round-headed rear entrance with flat pilasters, an impost band, archivolt, and a 2-panel door. The gable end of number 1 is rendered with a felted slate roof. This is an interesting example of early workers’ housing, built for colliers.
