Description

The building comprises two houses, Kirkless Hall and Kirkless Hall Farmhouse. A datestone, likely not original, reads "BUILT 1663," and the structure has undergone later alterations and additions. It is constructed primarily of brick with stone dressings, and has a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and originally comprised seven bays, with a later addition forming the seventh bay. The first and fifth bays project forward under gabled roofs. The first four bays have a stone base; the first bay features quoins and raised brick diapering. The fifth bay has a plastered brick base with a timber-frame pattern. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, although those in the seventh bay have single glazing bars. Windows in the first bay and the second, third, and fourth bays of the ground floor have wedge lintels. Windows in the sixth and seventh bays of the ground floor, and the third bay of the first floor, have gauged-brick cambered arches; the last is blocked with a gablet containing a blocked round opening. The first bay shows evidence of blocked segmental-headed windows with brick hoods flanking later windows, and these windows are paired in the attic. Plain entrances are situated in the second and fifth bays. Traces of a blocked entrance are visible on the right return of the first bay, with a datestone above, and on the seventh bay. A cross-axial stack is present, along with one stack to the rear wing and a gable-end stack. The left return features a projecting lateral stack and paired segmental-headed windows to the right. The rear of the building has various later projections. The group value of this building is recognised for its significant architectural or historical interest.
