Description

High Lawn is a house, built around 1865 and later converted into flats. It is constructed of rendered brickwork with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The building is square in plan with a central staircase, two storeys high, and features a substantial addition to the left, designed in a matching style. The facade is organised around three bays by three bays, featuring a stone plinth, banded rustication on the ground floor, a first-floor sill band, a blocking course, an eaves cornice, and a parapet. A two-storey projecting porch is centrally positioned, with a large window opening flanked by pilasters above a recessed porch supported by Ionic columns. There are three windows with architraves, sill panels, and sash windows. The original symmetry has been altered by the addition of two windows to the left of the first floor, and a bay window, which is nevertheless sympathetic in appearance. The garden elevation, with three bays, is notable for a two-storey bow window with sash windows on each floor. A belvedere, added slightly later, crowns the roof and is characterised by oval corner lights, rows of windows separated by pilasters, and elaborate cast-iron detailing along the ridge. Prominent chimneys are also present. A four-bay wing extends to the left, mirroring the detailing of the main house. The interior contains a fine staircase with twisted balusters, a carved newel column, an oval belvedere light above the staircase, and wall paintings.
