Description
This barn, situated to the south-east of Birch Farmhouse, likely dates to the 18th century but incorporates cruck frames from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brickwork with a slate roof. The barn is a long range, with a first floor extending along much of its length. A probable hay barn is open to the right, and a two-storey wing projects from the front, originally containing a shippon (cow shed) and a hayloft. Various openings include doors, casement windows, and dormers, along with diamond-shaped honeycomb breather vents to the shippon and hayloft. Two full crucks, featuring collar yokes and tie beams, stand on either side of the former threshing floor. The open bay is supported by two tie-beam roof trusses, probably of 18th-century date.
