Description
The Old Barn is a small cruck-framed barn, likely dating from the 17th century. Its walls are made partly of handmade brick and partly of modern brick replacement, while the gable at the east end features cruck framing with clamstaff and daub infill. The roof is covered with corrugated iron and has boarded eaves that cover thatch. The barn has a rectangular three-bay plan, with a full-height wagon doorway in the center and plain doorways on either side. There are slit breathers on all sides of the first bay and diamond-pattern breathers in the west gable. The rear of the third bay is covered with a corrugated iron sheet.
Inside, there are two full cruck trusses, each with a tie-beam and yoke. The second truss also has curved dorsals held on pegs and a strut, while both trusses have vacant housings for tie-beams, spurs, and collars, which may indicate a possible domestic origin. The barn features trenched overlapped purlins with some straight wing bracing, and the original rafters support horizontal but irregular laths.
