Description

The School is now a house, built in 1871-2. Designed by John Douglas, it is constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone and terracotta dressings, and has a clay tile roof. The original schoolroom was open to the roof, but has since been floored over as part of the conversion to a house. It includes a rear wing and a porch on the left. The main facade has three bays, featuring a projecting chimneystack between the first and second bays with decorative brick shafts set diagonally. Seven-light mullion windows in moulded terracotta are present on either side. A dormer gable in the second bay contains a three-light mullion window and a lozenge-shaped gable decoration. A twentieth-century patio window has been inserted into the third bay, and another is present at the rear. The hipped porch has a hipped bellcote on the gable of the main roof. The interior, although largely altered, retains two pairs of truncated crucks that support the roof, along with cruck spurs supporting the wallplate and a collar beam the purlins – an unusual revival of an early building technique.
