Description
The war memorial in St Werburg's churchyard is a First World War memorial, erected in 1920, with names of those lost during the Second World War added later. It is made of Aberdeen granite and features a simple Celtic cross-style design.
The memorial is aligned with the center of St Werburg Church's west window and stands on a square plinth with a tapering square base. The front (west) face has relief lettering that reads 'FOR GOD, FOR KING, FOR COUNTRY,' along with the names, rank, and regiment of ten men who died. At the bottom of the base, there is additional relief lettering that states, 'THEY WHOM THIS CROSS COMMEMORATES WERE AMONG/ THOSE WHO IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1919 ENDURED/ HARDNESS, FACED DANGER AND PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT/ OF MEN BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE/ THEIR NAME LIVETH EVERMORE/ ECCLESIASTICUS C44V14.' The south face features '1939 - 1945' in relief numerals, along with the name, rank, and regiment of three men who died. Above the base is a simple Celtic-style cross.
