Description
The Church of Saint Werburg is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1883 and 1885 by architect John Douglas for Mr. R. E. Egerton in Warburton. It is built from snecked red sandstone and features a clay tile roof. The church includes a nave with a north aisle and a south porch, as well as a chancel and a north-east tower.
The nave and aisle consist of four bays, characterized by a moulded sill band, continuous hoodmoulds, overhanging eaves, and a steeply pitched roof. Above the arched doorway, there is a cusped statue niche. The aisle has two-light windows, while the nave features three and four-light windows in each bay, showcasing free Perpendicular (or Decorated) tracery. There are no buttresses except for those on the west side of the chancel and a massive buttress that separates the nave and chancel, which is gableted, weathered, and has a sundial mounted on one of its upper faces. The three-bay chancel is treated similarly but includes a coped parapet.
The tower is three stages high with diagonal buttresses that have been weathered several times. Each face of the tower has two two-light belfry openings, an enriched band, castellations, and diagonally set corner pinnacles adorned with crockets.
Inside, the nave arcade features octagonal columns with moulded capitals and bases, arch-braced roof trusses, and a barrel roof in the chancel. Notable interior elements include a font cover dated 1595 and an oak chest from the Old Saint Werburg's church.
