Description

Ashworth Hall Estate Cottages and the adjoining barn date from the 18th century and may be adaptations of an earlier building. They are constructed from coursed hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, while the rear features brick and signs of timber framing. The two cottages flank an arched carriage opening leading to Ashworth Hall. The barn, located to the right, has two full-height cart openings with a lean-to between them and a cow house on the right side, which extends to a rear wing with a hay loft above.

The central studded oak doors of the cottages are set within a flat arched opening that has recessed spandrels, an ovolo-moulded surround, and a large hoodmould. Each cottage has two bays with casement windows featuring square cut lintels and sills, as well as doorways with monolithic jambs. Stone quoins and an ornate ball finial are present. The cottages also have 17th-century-style cavetto moulded mullion windows, which may be re-used, concealed on the left gable by a lean-to addition. The carriage entry shows exposed timber framing, likely from an earlier period. The barn includes circular pitching holes with moulded architraves, vent slots, stone quoins, a king-post roof, and owl holes in the gables.
