Description
Numbers 25 and 27, including the wall and railings, are offices that were formerly the Constitutional Club and were originally known as Bradford Buildings. They date from around 1870 and were designed by architect George Woodhouse. The buildings are constructed of red brick with blue brick and stone dressings, topped by a steeply pitched graded slate roof in the Venetian Gothic style.
The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical layout, with No. 25 forming a separately roofed block to the right, consisting of a four-window range. Each floor has arcaded windows with banded heads and trefoiled lights on the first floor, with a doorway to the left. No. 27, to the right, has a symmetrical five-window range with gablets over the outer bays and a central entrance. The ground floor has sash windows with flat stone heads, while the upper floor features stilted arched arcaded windows divided by central shafts. The basement windows have depressed arched heads, and the gablets include sexfoiled lights. A modillion eaves cornice adds to the Gothic detailing, which continues on the rear elevation, featuring a white glazed brick courtyard.
The interior has not been inspected. A notable subsidiary feature is the wrought-iron railings on a chamfered stone plinth wall, with cast-iron lantern bases on either side of the steps leading to No. 27.
