Description
The Former County Court, located on Mawdsley Street in Bolton, was built between 1866 and 1869. It has since been used as benefit offices and, as of 1996, a public house and restaurant. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with a rusticated ground floor and a slate roof.
It stands two storeys tall and features a ten-window range. There are entrances on each side, with paired panelled and studded doors set in stressed architraves. The building's twelve-pane iron-framed windows also have similar architraves, and all openings display the initials 'V.R.' superimposed on foliate key-stones. The upper windows are round arched and adorned with balustrading, while Corinthian capitals sit atop engaged shafts that support scallop moulded arches. A modillion eaves cornice adds to the decorative elements. The rear elevation is made of brick and includes round arched windows on the first floor, which illuminate the courtroom. The interior has not been inspected.
