Description

Nelson House is an office building dated 1889, designed by Alfred Waterhouse for the Prudential Assurance Company. It is constructed of brick and terracotta with a slate roof. The building has three storeys, including a high ground storey with an inserted mezzanine floor.

The exterior features a three-window range facing Bradshawgate, with an oriel turret at the corner and a two-window return to Nelson Square. The ground floor openings on Bradshawgate include a central entrance, which has been renewed but retains its original openings with drop-ended hoodmoulds. The entrance on Nelson Square has also been renewed.

A full-height canted oriel window forms the angle turret, with terracotta panels beneath the mullioned and transomed first-floor windows. There is an oriel window above the entrance on the Bradshawgate elevation. All first-floor windows are mullioned and transomed, featuring arched upper lights. The second storey has arched lights in the mullioned windows, with blind arcading forming a frieze below them. The turret has arched lights at the upper level, and there is a coped gable over the right-hand windows in the Nelson Square elevation. The building also has end wall stacks. The interior was not inspected.
