Description
Brookfield Fourways is a pair of houses built in 1864, constructed of cream brick with yellow sandstone bands, imposts, and keystones, topped with grey slate roofs featuring deep modillioned eaves. Designed in the Italianate style, the front facade is two stories high with a recessed center that includes two windows of three lights under skewback arches on the lower level and two windows of two lights under round arches on the upper level. Each wing has a single window and features pediment gables at the front, along with square, hipped, one-story bay windows that have four round-arched lights, and two-light bedroom windows under skewback arches. The houses have Italianate chimneys and entrances located in gabled porches at each end. The right end, No.16, has a four-panel door in a timber case with a plain segmental fanlight and a square oriel window on corbels of stone to the right. The left end, No.18, features double part-glazed doors and a mid-20th century alteration at the rear that is in keeping with the original design. Inside, No.16 has an open-well staircase beneath a small glazed dome, four-panel doors, internal shutters, and contemporary marble fireplaces in the two front rooms. No.18 has a different layout but retains similar features, except for the fireplaces.
