Description
The Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct, built around 1770 by James Brindley, is a canal aqueduct that spans Bridgewater Street. It is constructed from sandstone and brick. The aqueduct features a deep segmental arch made of brick, supported by stone springers and a stone band on each face. The archway has a downward curve towards the center beneath the canal, and the sidewalls under the archway have a curved batter. The north face has a curved and battered stone abutment, while the south abutment includes a 20th-century concrete buttress on the right side and a battered retaining wall on the left side. The old red brick parapet along the towpath on the north bank of the canal has plain stone coping and quoins. Additionally, there is a raised pavement on the east side under the archway.
