Description
The Covered Canal Dock, located north of Henry Street, dates from around 1770 and is likely the work of James Brindley. It is constructed from local brown brick and features a round-arched opening that leads into a dock measuring approximately 25 metres by 3 metres, topped with a barrel-vaulted roof. The dock has a brick plinth that rises about 0.5 metre above water level, with the rear end designed in a semi-circular shape. Behind the dock, a brick wall was later built to close off the tunnel, which includes a sandstone block that appears to have been intended for mooring tackle. Historically, the dock was used to supply a coal-yard situated on land that has since been redeveloped at its southern end.
