Description
Lymm Cross is a Grade I listed structure, primarily dating from the early to mid 17th century, with restoration completed in 1897. It is made of sandstone and is situated on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone, featuring buff masonry. The cross itself stands on a square base that consists of five steps with coved treads. Surrounding the cross is a pavilion constructed of red sandstone, which has square corner pillars with roughly moulded bases and bell capitals. These pillars support a stone roof that features a pedimented gable on each face, topped with ball finials. At the top of the cross is a tapered extension, likely from the 17th century, which holds a stone ball and an ornate weathervane. Additionally, on the east, south, and west gables, there are bronze sundials from 1897 inscribed with the phrases "We are a Shadow; Save Time; Think of the Last."
