Description
The Lymm War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with an additional inscription added after the Second World War. It is made of Woolton red sandstone and is situated at the top of a grassed bank, surrounded by gravestones at the rear and overlooking the Lymm Dam.
The memorial follows Sir Reginald Blomfield’s ‘cross of sacrifice’ design, taking the shape of a Latin cross with octagonal sections throughout. It features a sword of sacrifice carved in relief on both sides of the cross. The arms and shaft of the cross have lipped, bossed terminals, and the shaft tapers slightly and flares at the base, leading to a short foot. The cross is mounted on an octagonal plinth with a three-stepped octagonal base.
The main face of the plinth has an inscription carved in low relief that reads: "SACRED TO/ THE MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PLACE/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ AND." Below this inscription, at the foot of the plinth and extending along three sides, is the dedication: "ALL WHO FELL/ IN WORLD WAR II/ 1939 – 1945."
