Description

Brookfield House is a house dating from circa 1865. It is built of Flemish bond red brick with stone dressings, mostly painted, and has grey slate roofs. The architecture is vigorous Gothic in style. The house has two storeys plus attics, and a three-storey tower porch topped by a truncated spire. The spire has hipped dormers with wooden framing and a cast-iron cresting. The ornate doorway features colonnettes with stiff-leaf capitals and an arched fanlight, which has curved oak and vine leaves carved in its spandrels. There is a four-panel shaped door and a Geometrical glazed inner door. Above the door is a small balcony with ornate iron railing, and a casement window of three arched lights to the third storey. A two-light bay window is located to the right of the porch, flush with it, with a two-light sash window above it, set under a pointed relieving arch. The left wing has one and a half bays, featuring a two-storey square bay window with three-light sashes to the lower storey and two lights to the upper storey. The upper windows are fitted with relieving arches, and both bay windows diminish at the first floor with hips of shaped copper. The multiple-light windows are fitted with shoulder-arched lintels, colonnettes with stiff-leaf capitals, and two-pane sashes. A rear landing window, with three trefoil-head lights, has a stone surround and mullions, recessed under a camber-arch of brick. The left end of the house is relatively plain. The gables feature open verges with shaped trussed rafters, modillion eaves, and tall, shaped chimneys. The interior is richly detailed, with an opulent open-well staircase, moulded plaster ceilings with ornate cornices in the main rooms, and pier-glasses in traceried frames within the drawing room.
