Description

This early 19th-century stone is located 80 meters east of Bankfield Farmhouse in Mickle Trafford. It is a large square block made of red sandstone. The west face of the stone features the inscription "MICKLE TRAFFORD CART-ROAD ONLY," while the east face has a worn inscription that reads "Parish CART-ROAD, FOOTPATH .........ally." The stone was likely erected to prevent unauthorized droving and carting across the Gowy Valley and along Plemstall Lane, which allowed individuals to avoid paying tolls on the turnpike road.
