Description
The building known as the Shippon, located 25 meters north-west of Leadgate Farmhouse, was originally a barn but has been converted into a shippon and hayloft. It dates from the early 17th century but underwent extensive alterations and rebuilding in the early 18th century, with a further outshut added in the early 20th century. The upper storey is timber-framed with brick nogging, while the rest of the structure is made of orange brick laid in English bond. The roof is covered with purple-red tiles. The building has a long, rectangular plan with an outshut. The east front features a central sliding door and several blocked entrances, along with 3-pane windows. The upper storey consists of 28 by 2 regular small frames with tension braces, and some panels are open as pitchholes. The gable ends have a brick band at the first floor. Inside, the layout has been significantly altered to create a parallel line of stalls. Some roof trusses remain, showcasing tie beams, collars, and queen posts.
