Description
This large L-shaped farmbuilding, located at the rear of Clotton Hall, dates from the early to mid-19th century and later in the century. It is constructed of orange brick in English bond and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a long west range that includes a loft above the shippons and carthouses. The nearly symmetrical two-storey front has 11 bays, with the central bay under a stone-coped gable topped by a weathervane. A door with a segmental head is flanked by 6-pane windows, and there are circular pitch holes with diamond-shaped ventilation patterns on either side, along with a semi-circular headed pitch hole in the gable. The left side has a similar door and window below a pitch hole, while the right side features three carthouses with broad segmentally arched entrances. The south range, which serves as a barn, is shorter and older, with a two-storey, four-bay north front adorned with a dentil cornice. It has an open hay loft at the left end and a driftway at the right end, with a large and small door with segmental heads and cross-shaped ventilation patterns between them. The building is listed for its group value.
