Description
The bridge over the moat and archway to Lower Huxley Hall is a Grade II* listed structure. The bridge dates from the late medieval period, while the remaining work of the archway and curtain wall is from the early to mid-17th century. It is constructed of buff and pink sandstone ashlar, with some sections of orange brick in English garden wall bond in the curtain wall.
The bridge features a pair of low segmental arches that are separated by triangular cutwaters. A plain parapet with chamfered coping follows the line of the cutwaters, and the carriageway is flagged. On the hall side of the bridge, there is an impressive moulded semi-circular archway, which includes raised springers, a rosette on the keystone, and a projecting band above. The archway is topped with a strapwork entablature that supports an open scrolled pediment, flanked by finials. Triangular ramps lead down onto the parapets. At the rear, there are stubs of a brick curtain wall featuring stone quoins and copings.
