Description
Higher Huxley Mill is a watermill with origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier. It was extended in the early 18th century and had brick walls added in the 19th century. The building features washed brick and some timber-framing set on an ashlar red sandstone base, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The east face of the mill shows the setting for an undershot wheel, with a small light positioned above it, and a weatherboarded loft that jetties out over the stream to the right. The south face has two storeys and two bays, featuring a small two-light window and a stable door beneath a cambered brick head. The rear of the building displays some crude timber framing. Inside, there is a large spur wheel inscribed "1811 T Littler," which drives two pairs of French stones located upstairs. No other machinery remains, but the wooden framework and layout are still present. The rest of Mill Farmhouse, located in Newton-by-Tattenhall, is not of special interest.
