Description

This building is a shippon, now used as a store, located 40 metres north of Bodgate Farmhouse. It dates from the late 17th century and is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with the left side wall replaced by rendered and painted concrete block. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with rag slate, featuring half hipped ends.

The shippon has an overall rectangular plan with central entrances on both the front and rear. It is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front. There is a wide plank door near the centre, flanked by two small window openings with 19th-century casements. A larger window opening is located on the first floor to the left, with a smaller one to the right.

Inside, the shippon features heavy chamfered floor joists and internal window and door lintels. Slate partitions separate the stalls, and the roof structure retains some 18th-century trusses, although the rafters were largely replaced in the 20th century. This building is part of an unaltered group that includes the stables, pound house, and Bodgate Farmhouse.
