Description

This building is a shippon, dated 1668 on the lintel of the door, located approximately 200 meters south of Fellhill Farm. It has been slightly altered and is constructed of mixed random rubble with quoins and a stone slate roof. The shippon features a rectangular two-unit plan aligned on an east-west axis, facing north. It has two low storeys and two bays, characterized by very narrow slit breathers and gable copings with kneelers.

The western bay includes a square-headed doorway with a moulded surround, a rectangular lintel inscribed with raised lettering "R+R /I I # PM / 1668" (with the # representing a square with circled corners) and a hoodmould. Above and to the left of this doorway is a loading doorway with chamfered jambs and a wooden lintel. The eastern bay has a square-headed doorway with a plain 19th-century surround, flanked by a pair of very small chamfered rectangular windows.

The gable walls and rear of the building are blind, but the left end shows traces of a formerly adjoining building. Inside, the shippon is laterally partitioned at the ground floor only, with a loft floor in the western bay. Each bay contains two lateral sets of three wooden boskins, likely from the 19th century, and the roof features four principal-rafter trusses supporting two pairs of purlins. This shippon forms a good visual and functional group with the barn located approximately 5 meters northeast, representing a notable example of an upland "outfarm."
