Description

Numbers 1 and 2 Elm Grove House is a town house that has been converted into a hotel. It was built in the mid 18th century, with some early 19th-century alterations and further changes made in the 20th century. The building features a whitened roughcast exterior and a slate roof.

The structure has two storeys and an attic, with a four-bay street front that includes giant pilasters at the outer angles. The second bay contains a 20th-century eight-panel door set in a doorcase with panelled reveals, topped by a moulded flat hood supported by moulded cantilever brackets. The windows throughout the building are 20th-century glazing bar sash windows. The street-facing windows are recessed sashes, with six-over-six panes on the ground floor, six-over-nine panes on the first floor, and squat three-over-three panes in the attic. The ground floor windows have louvred shutters, while all windows on the ground and first floors feature painted stone sills and shaped lintels; the attic windows have flat painted stone sills and lintels. A moulded string course runs along the attic storey, and there is a moulded eaves cornice beneath a plain coped parapet.

On the left side of the building, there is a single-storey added porch that has a six-panel door with a rectangular overlight, topped by a pediment with dentil ornamentation, which is set within a semicircular headed reveal.

Inside, the building features a staircase with a curtail step, a cut and bracketed string, turned newels, and a wreathed handrail. The ground and upper floors have six-panel doors.
