Description
The Edward Hotel is a town house that has been converted into a hotel, dating from around 1790. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof. The building is a double-depth block with a rear wing and stands three storeys tall.
The front facade is plain, with an entrance doorway located off-centre to the left. This doorway includes a rectangular fanlight with vertical glazing bars, consisting of three panes, and a six-panel door where the upper four panels are fielded. On either side of the doorway are flush framed sash windows. Above these, on the first floor, are two similar sashes, and on the second floor, there are two shorter sashes. All windows feature glazing bars arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration and are set within openings that have flat-arched brick heads.
Inside, there is a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newel posts, and an arch with plaster corbels leading to the hall. The Edward Hotel is part of an important group of buildings that includes Numbers 78-90 London Road and other late 18th century and early 19th century houses along this significant approach road to Gloucester.
