Description

A pair of terrace houses, dating to circa 1827, located at the west end of Hillfield Parade in Gloucester. They were built as part of a terrace development commissioned by Joseph Roberts, a printer. The houses are constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a slate roof and brick stacks. They are arranged as a double-depth block, with mirror-image designs and rear wings.

The exterior presents a unified four-bay facade across three storeys, with semi-basements. There is a slightly offset plinth rising to ground-floor sill level. The ground floor has banded rustication, topped by a raised band at first-floor level. The first and second floors feature giant, shallow pilasters with simple moulded capitals supporting a moulded cornice and frieze band, which projects forward above the end bays. A shallow attic storey has a moulded cornice and parapet, also breaking forward above the end bays, with shallow recessed panels in the parapet projections. The two central entrance doorways on the ground floor are framed by shallow pilasters with capitals, supporting a continuous entablature. Sashes flank each doorway on the ground floor, while the first floor of each house has two similar sashes, and the second floor has two shorter sashes, all with glazing bars (3x4 panes). Basement sashes have glazing bars (4x4 panes). The attic storey features two casement pairs in No.100 and two sashes in No.102, both with glazing bars (4x2 panes).

The interior is believed to retain original features and joinery, though it has not been inspected.
