Description
This is a gate lodge, dating to circa 1867, designed by Albert Estcourt for Charles Walker and originally located within the grounds of Hillfield House, on Denmark Road. It stands to the west of the entrance gates to the Hillfield Rest Garden. The lodge is constructed of ashlar with low-pitched slate roofs, wide eaves, gabled ends to the front block, and a hipped roof to the rear wing. It is in an Italianate style, comprising a single-depth two-storey block and a single-storey wing to the rear, with a single-storey canted bay window at the east gable end. The front of the lodge faces the driveway at an angle.
The front block has a pronounced batter to the lower storey, a continuous raised band at first floor, and a slight corbelled projection to the upper part of the walls below the eaves and gable bargeboards. A central stack rises from a corbelled arch with a raised keystone, situated directly below the first-floor band. The symmetrical front features arched sash windows on both ground and first floors, all set within openings with arches and projecting stone sills on small brackets. The canted bay window has an arched sash to the front, and smaller sashes to the sides, with raised arches linked by impost mouldings and continuous projecting sills. A two-light arched window sits on the first floor, supported centrally by a column with a moulded base and foliage capital. The rear wing features a moulded string course at the level of the arched openings. The entrance doorway has a semicircular fanlight under a hood, supported by curved timber brackets. To the left of the doorway is a pair of arched sash windows, mirroring those of the front block. The interior of the lodge was not inspected during listing.
