Description
The entrance gates to Hillfield Gardens, located on the north side of London Road in Gloucester, were built around 1867 by Albert Estcourt for Charles Walker. Originally serving as the gates to the grounds of Hillfield House, these gates feature impressive ashlar piers and a wrought-iron gate design.
The exterior showcases massive ashlar gate piers, with additional piers at the outer corners of the flanking quadrant balustrades, all set on a vermiculated base. Each pier has moulded plinths, recessed panels on each face, moulded cornices, and capstones adorned with semicircular lunettes. The balustrades are composed of turned balusters and moulded copings that connect with the cornices of the piers. The wrought-iron gates include a lower section with an intricate circular pattern and an upper section featuring finials on the intermediate rail and below the top rail between the standards. Additionally, a short length of solid balustrade connects the outer right-hand pier to the Gate Lodge No. 101.
