Description

Davenham War Memorial is situated at the junction of London Road and Hartford Road, in front of Davenham Church of England Primary School, which is also a listed building. The memorial features an equal-armed cross topped with a small wheel, standing on a square shaft that is slightly tapered. This shaft is mounted on a tall pedestal, which in turn rests on a large rectangular plinth with a stepped base.

The cross head is intricately carved with foliage patterns and the monogram IHS, while the shaft displays a reversed sword. At the base of the shaft is a small roundel surrounded by foliage, inscribed with the dates 1914 and 1918. The main dedicatory inscription is carved in relief around the top of the plinth, stating: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF DAVENHAM WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR."

The names of those who fell in the First World War are incised into the faces of the plinth, with an additional name from the Second World War on the rear face. A stone plaque on the front face of the base, framed by an ornamental border, is inscribed with "1939 IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF 1945 THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE" and lists 26 names.

The memorial is surrounded by metal railings, which include a double gate at the front. The railings feature equal-armed crosses that reference the stone cross head of the memorial.
