Description

The Hampton in Arden War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated at the junction of High Street and Shadowbrook Lane.

Made of Portland stone, the memorial features a Latin cross with a tapering, hexagonal shaft and a splayed base. At the center of the cross is a cross patée symbol. The shaft rises from a hexagonal plinth with a moulded top, which sits on a four-stepped hexagonal base. Surrounding the top step of the base are three rectangular blocks that are regularly spaced and cut into the step below. The entire structure is elevated on a hexagonal stone platform.

The main inscription is located on the front (south) face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HAMPTON IN ARDEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM." A cross symbol is incised beneath this inscription. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the adjoining faces, with 12 names on the left face and 11 names on the right face, which also includes the letters RIP below the names. All lettering on the plinth is incised.

Below the main inscription is a rectangular block with the dates 1914 - 1918 carved in relief. Directly beneath this, on the third step down, is an incised inscription that reads: "SONS OF THIS PLACE - LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD." The bottom step features the dates 1939 – 1945 carved in relief, with one name incised beneath.

The memorial is positioned on a sloping site, which is addressed by its placement on a raised grassed area surrounded by irregular-coursed stone retaining walls that decrease in height to create a level area.
