Description
The fountain and canopy, dating from the late 19th century, is constructed of yellow sandstone ashlar. It features a square canopy set within a triangular surround, with low outer walls that originally supported railings and formed the triangular shape, including a central opening to the northwest, paved with cobble sets.
The eastern front of the canopy has square corner piers with roll moulds at the corners, moulded bases, and capitals that flare outwards at the tops of the columns. Above is a shaped archway set in a gable, which bears the inscription "IN:MEMORY of JOHN:HOSKEN:HARPER:ESQ OF:DAVENHAM:HALL." The gable is adorned with crow-steps.
At the top, an octagonal shaft supports a spire, which features a coat of arms and a band of fig leaf ornamentation. Gablets are present on all sides, from which rises an octagonal spirelet. The fountain basin is also octagonal and includes a fountainhead in the form of a lion's head with a spout in its mouth, mounted on a circular moulded shaft.
The western side mirrors the eastern front and includes an inscription that reads "HE:WAS:A:FATHER:TO:THE:POOR:AND:THE:CAUSE:WHICH:HE:KNEW:NOT:HE:SEARCHED:OUT:JOB CH.29V.16."
