Description
The lych gate in the churchyard of St Wilfred is a late 19th-century structure made of red sandstone ashlar with a timber superstructure and a plain tile roof. The road front features an ashlar plinth with a chamfered top. Above this, there are lateral posts with bead moulding along the inner edges, supporting a four-centred arch that continues the bead moulding. An inscription on the arch bressumer reads, "GRANT O LORD THAT THROUGH THE GRAVE/AND GATES OF DEATH/WE MAY PASS TO OUR JOYFUL RESURRECTION." There is a brattished band above the arch and decorated open framing in the gable, with moulded bargeboards on either side. The left and right reveals each have three square posts with ramped lower buttressing pieces and arched braces in between. This lych gate is included for its group value with the church.
