Description

Numbers 134, 136, and 138 on Northgate Street are two shops with accommodation, currently functioning as a café and a baker's shop. They date from the early 19th century and are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond at the front and in English garden wall bond at the north end and rear. The roof is made of thick grey slates and is hipped at the north-west corner. The building has two storeys, featuring two doors and three shop windows. The south and middle windows are flanked by a part-glazed three-panel door with a radial-bar overlight, and have rendered stall-risers, simple wooden pilasters, and fascias with blind-boxes. The north door, which is in a round-arched opening with unmoulded attached pillars and a radial-bar fanlight, is accompanied by a two-pane shop window to the north, set in a lined rendered surround that wraps around the corner.

On the second storey, there are three recessed 16-pane sash windows with painted stone sills and wedge lintels, all beneath a low parapet with a plain stone coping. The building features two ridge chimneys. The north face includes two blocked doorways, a later lateral chimney, an entry to the rear yard, and on the upper storey, two flush 16-pane sashes with stone sills and cambered brick heads. The rear has replaced doors and various windows, including one flush 16-pane sash. The interior does not have any identified features of interest.
