Description
Northgate Bridge is a road bridge built around 1790, possibly under the supervision of Thomas Telford, who was the consultant engineer for the Chester Canal. The bridge is constructed from coursed red sandstone and features a deep segmental arch that spans the ditch of the Roman and City Walls, which was deepened to accommodate the canal in the 1770s. It has moulded bands on the voussoirs and shows signs of damage with panels above the crown of the arch on each side. The bridge also includes moulded plinths for renewed iron railings, which are arranged in four panels between tapered stone piers and two panels to the north of the former toll cottage on the west side.
