Description

Northgate Bakery is a building located on George Street in Chester, dating from around 1905. It has been altered in the late 20th century and is currently used as furniture showrooms, offices, and a surgery. The structure is made of brown and red brick with stucco and features grey slate roofs.

The building consists of two and three storeys, with a long central block flanked by gabled east and taller west wings. The east wing has an altered shop window set between brick piers and a fascia with a cornice on consoles. The central block has a late 20th-century altered shopfront, a 20-pane casement window, and two doors with six fielded panels each, topped with eight-pane overlights and timber hoods on consoles. The west wing features a circular nine-pane window surrounded by keystones, alongside an altered shopfront.

On the second storey, the west wing displays small framing with a pair of mullioned and transomed casements that protrude from the wall. The gable features herringbone strutting and a modillion cornice. The central block is stuccoed and has five circular nine-pane windows set in cartouches, along with a modillion cornice at the eaves and a central gable. The west wing bears a fascia inscribed with "NORTHGATE BAKERY" in raised Edwardian lettering, banded brick quoins, and three 20-pane hopper windows on the second and third storeys, topped by a pediment gable with a modillion cornice and a lateral chimney.

At the rear, the upper storey of the central block has almost continuous glazing, and the rear gables of the wings are detailed similarly to the front. The interior surfaces were covered where access was possible.
