Description

This is a town house built in 1886 by TM Lockwood. It is constructed of red brick, with terracotta and stone detailing, and has a Westmorland green slate roof. The design is in a Free Style, and the house is asymmetrical, with a double-fronted appearance to Upper Northgate Street, specifically designed to take advantage of a prominent corner location.

The ground floor features a five-panel door within a case of brick pilasters, stone imposts, and scrolled pediment on consoles, above which is a one-pane fanlight set within a round brick arch. Informally arranged windows appear in round-arched and segmental-arched openings, articulated with stringcourses and pilasters. These include a ground-floor window on each side of the door, a first-floor round-arched window towards the corner, and paired segmental-arched windows to the first and second floors, all beneath a pair of small gables. Rainwater heads are inscribed with ‘TN’ and ‘1886’. A secondary six-panelled door is present on the south front, facing Canal Street. A broad gable adjoining the corner incorporates a large, canted oriel window to the first-floor drawing room, constructed of moulded brick, stone, and terracotta, with windows to the first and second landings. This gable also has a carved stone panel dated 1886, intricate carving in the apex, and a brick dentil cornice to the verges. The rear gable of the main roof has a pair of round-arched narrow windows above the hipped roof of a lower rear wing. The interior remains uninspected.
