Description

Nos. 5 and 7 Upper Northgate Street are a pair of town houses, now used as offices, likely built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond with a grey slate roof that runs parallel to the front. The buildings rise three storeys and feature four windows each. A painted stone plinth is present, along with two stone steps leading to round-arched doorways. No. 5 has a door with four fielded panels above two flush panels, topped by a radial-bar fanlight within a case that includes recessed fluted pillars and an ornamented architrave. No. 7 has a nine-panel door in an archway that was rebuilt in the late 19th century.

The buildings have painted stone bands at the ground and first floors, as well as stone sills at the third floor. They feature wedge lintels and replaced horned two-pane sash windows, with two windows on each side of the doors and four on the first and second floors, almost equally spaced. A central rainwater pipe and a modillion cornice are also present, along with a central ridge chimney. The rear of the buildings has replaced almost flush two-pane sashes.

Inside, No. 5 has a six-panel door and cornice in the ground floor and first floor front rooms. The stair to the first floor has been renewed and features a dogleg design with seven winders in a semicircle at the turn, square newels with shaped tops, three stick balusters per step, and a swept rail. There is an L-shaped stair leading to the attic, with a door of two fielded panels. No. 7 includes a brick barrel-vaulted cellar with two chambers and cornices on the ground floor, while the upper floors could not be inspected.
