Description

Northgate House is a toll cottage, house, and workshop, built around 1800 on the site of a former city gaol. The building incorporates possibly earlier lower walling. It is constructed of coursed red sandstone, brick, and render, with hipped grey slate roofs.

The building stands partly one storey and partly two storeys, with the two-storey section featuring three windows. The south face, which faces the city wall, has two doors: one with six panels and the other with four fielded panels. Two 20th-century windows have been inserted between the doors, and a square bay window is located west of the west door. The single-storey east wing, built in two phases, includes a 16-pane flush sash window and a projecting gabled porch with two stone steps leading to a five-panel door, accompanied by two-pane sidelights and a three-pane overlight. The first floor of the main block has three recessed 16-pane sash windows, with painted stone sills and simple lintels. A long workshop wing extends west, and is partly stone-walled.

The lower, outer portion of the east wing appears to have been a toll cottage; its east end, facing Upper Northgate Street, has a near full-width canted bay window with replacement panes. Two chimneys are located north of the main block ridge, and two chimneys are blocked on the ridge of the east wing. The north face, which overlooks the canal, exhibits lower stone walling, an unequal 12-pane flush sash window in a lodge, a six-pane sash window, and four replaced windows in the main block. A stone plinth with a stringcourse is present, along with five windows with vertical bars and a stone west gable chimney to the workshop. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
